Coeliac disease is as good as unknown in the Romanian population.
The foodstuff industry has still problems with the term gluten, because they do not learn anything about gluten in their food high schools and colleges.
However, the traditional Romanian kitchen has very many gluten-free meals on their menu. If you are planing a trip to Romania, please copy this romanian text in word, mark that colored words and print it out. Please show it to the waiter or the cook in restaurants. Romania adopted the EC directive 2003/89/EC for food of normal consumption. The producers have to declare gluten if they use gluten in their prepacked food.
Romanian food for normal consumption in food stores are glutenfree if the ingredient list does not contain one of the following terms:[gluten], [grau],[ faina de grau],[proteine din grau],[secara],[amidon de grau], [bors]. Avoid products having just the following terms without any origin or E-number: [proteine vegetale, stabilizator, emulgator]. And about the contamination? It's the same problem like in every prepacked food for normal consumption in the EC.
Glutenfree are only prepacked maize and rice pasta from Monte Banato, produced from Adriano Alimenti, Italy. They are available in most big food shops. Don't look for the cross grain symbol because they do not have it. We have still no legislation for dietary food and Adriano Alimenti doesn't use CG symbol because of this lacking legislation.
Please note: we have no glutenfree declared food in food shops without this pasta from Monte Banato and some imported infant- and child formulas with the CG symbol. We have just three little producers which are producing glutenfree food from ingredients glutenfree by nature. But their products are not tested for gluten-contamination and available only by post packed, after advanced order at the manufacturer.
